At WWPS all students have access to and are exposed to quality literature and rich texts. Engaging our students with the skills required to be life long readers is nurtured and modelled each day. 

Our whole school approach to reading includes teaching the components of the Big 6. These elements are the pillars in reading instruction: 

  • Oral language
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Fluency 
  • Comprehension

Best practice in every classroom provides experiences with books and other forms of print and model a love for reading. Our daily lessons include;

  • Independent Reading
  • Individual conferences
  • Guided reading groups
  • Explicit teaching
  • Reciprocal reading

Writing

Writing

At WWPS we believe that a love of writing stems from the integration of reading and writing and students see themselves as authors and write for purpose. The immersion of language and exposure to mentor texts and authors engages our students into the craft of writing. 

Quality writing must incorporate 6+1traits that enhances the use of rich vocabulary and the understanding of writing structures. These inlcude:

  • Ideas
  • Organisation
  • Voice
  • Word Choice
  • Sentence Fluency
  • Conventions
  • Presentation

Our writing model at WWPS explictly teaches these traits and daily instruction for students includes;

  • Writer's Notebooks (Years 3-6)
  • Colourful Semantics (F-2)
  • Explicit teaching
  • Small group writing instruction
  • Independent writing experiences
