Our Teaching Approach

At Warrnambool West, we believe great teaching makes the single biggest difference to how well a child learns. Everything we do in the classroom is guided by two connected frameworks: the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0 and the Science of Learning.

Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0

The VTLM 2.0 gives our teachers a shared, evidence-based framework for planning and delivering high-quality lessons. It means that regardless of which classroom your child is in, they can expect teaching that is purposeful, consistent and focused on their individual needs.

In practice, this looks like:

  • Clear learning goals so students understand what they are learning and why
  • Explicit teaching that breaks learning into manageable steps
  • Ongoing feedback that helps students improve
  • Regular use of assessment data to tailor learning to individual needs
  • A strong focus on wellbeing, engagement and inclusion

The Science of Learning

The Science of Learning is research into how the brain learns best. At Warrnambool West, we have embedded this research into our everyday teaching practice.

The evidence is clear: students learn most effectively when teaching is explicit and structured, when knowledge builds over time, and when students have opportunities to practise and revisit what they have learned until it sticks.

In our classrooms, this means:

  • Teachers show students clearly what to do and how to do it
  • Learning is broken into small, manageable steps
  • Students revisit and practise learning so it moves into long-term memory
  • Teachers regularly check understanding and adjust their teaching accordingly
  • A safe, supportive environment gives students the confidence to have a go

Together, VTLM 2.0 and the Science of Learning give every child at Warrnambool West the best possible foundation in reading, writing and mathematics, and the skills and confidence to keep growing as learners.
